The new look of Iphone 8
This coming month apple will reveal its highly anticipated Iphone 8 (a.k.a iPhone Edition, X or Pro). This coming model is said to be the most revolutionized Iphone model of all the previous models. It’s likely that features expected to debut on the iPhone 8 will become standard on all future Apple devices. With that in mind, here are 5 ways that the iPhone 8 will probably change iPhones forever.
No Home Button
In recent years, Apple has taken to streamlining its flagship device. The iPhone 7 did away with the audio jack, and the iPhone 8 is largely expected to be the first Apple smartphone to nix the Home button. In its place, the iPhone 8 is predicted to have a “Function Area.” Aside from a virtual Home button, the Area could also sport other peripheral UI elements that’ll be contextual to certain apps — play/pause controls for music apps, and copy/paste controls for text apps, as examples.
Additionally, according to recent revelations pulled out of the HomePod firmware, the Function Area could also hide itself during certain instances, like when watching a full-screen video or other media. Although once widely predicted to be the location of an under-display fingerprint sensor, that option is looking less likely as we get closer to the iPhone 8’s debut (but more on that later).
Edge-to-Edge OLED
Every iPhone thus far has used LCD displays, including the current-generation iPhone 7. While the incremental iPhone7s update is expected to retain the LCD screens, the iPhone 8 is pretty much confirmed to be the first iPhone to sport an OLED display. OLED displays carry a number of advantages, like deeper blacks, better contrast, wider viewing angles, and better battery life.
The iPhone 8 is also the first Apple flagship to do away with bezels entirely, and will instead feature a stunning edge-to-edge display that’ll take up basically the entire front of the device. We’ve already heard rumors that all iPhones in 2018 will feature OLED displays, so it stands to reason that Apple will eventually switch its entire lineup over to the edge-to-edge design, too. A 4-inch iPhone with a full-device display is still on our wish list.
Wireless Charging + USB-C
When it comes to wireless charging, Apple has admittedly been behind the game. But that’s due to change this year, as all three 2017 Apple handsets are rumored to be equipped with inductive wireless charging capabilities. That means that the new charging tech won’t be limited to Apple’s “Ferrari” flagship. That fact hints at wireless charging being a standard feature on all new iPhones from 2017 forward.
In addition, the iPhone 8 might be the first Apple device to come with a Lightning-to-USB Type-C cable. While not exactly a confirmed feature, the switch would make sense. USB Type-C shares a port with Thunderbolt, which is the standard used in new MacBook models. Indeed, there are signs of a future where you could connect your iPhone to your notebook without an adapter.
Face ID
Touch ID has been one of the most widely talked about iPhone 8 features. Specifically, whether the fingerprint sensor will be rear-mounted or displayed-embedded. Unfortunately for fans of either idea, the evidence is mounting that the iPhone 8 won’t include a Touch ID fingerprint sensor at all.
In its place, the iPhone 8 is rumored to have advanced facial recognition technology for biometric authentication. In simple terms, “Face ID” The iPhone 8’s selfie camera is already expected to sport advanced 3D sensors and Infrared technology that’ll allow for a secure biometric system that isn’t as easily fooled as others. Of course, whether “Face ID” will be secure enough to replace Touch ID entirely in future iPhones remains to be seen.
AR Optimized
Although all of the iPhone 8’s new features will be revolutionary in their own way, one area of focus stands out: augmented reality. The iPhone 8 will not only be the first AR-optimized iPhone, it’ll likely be the first mass-market smartphone ever to sport advanced features focused on augmented reality tech.
The iPhone 8 will launch in the fall alongside ARKit, a development toolset that’ll turn iOS into the largest AR-capable platform in the world. And rumor has it that the flagship Apple device will come equipped with advanced rear-facing lasers that’ll help enhance the AR experience. Apple seems to be doubling down on AR in general — including working on a smartphone-powered AR headset — so it’s a pretty safe bet that future iPhones will be made with the tech in mind.
